September 2007

The three-way competition between Narrabeen RSL, Newport Arms and us was an overwhelming success. As far as I could see members from all three clubs were having a great time and from the reports that have filtered through to my desk, we will be a hard act to follow. A huge thank you goes to all those who helped to make it such a success, the hard working committee, all of our sponsors, Colin Buckley for being so generous with his time and the RSL club for providing such a great venue.

The fishing in the tournament proved to be very difficult although I’m starting to see a pattern forming, that is that it is no accident that the guys who are leading the point scores seem to take a reasonable bag even on the days when many others struggle.

I ended up having a beer with a couple of the point score leaders after the 3-way. I must admit that they were very generous with their tips about how to catch more fish and I was swept out of the club with the cigarette butts later that night a more knowledgeable fisherman.

The tournament was won by Narrabeen, Avalon was 2nd and Newport Arms came in 3rd.

Richard Timbs won the open and the deep sea.

Peter Perckovic won the Rock & Beach.

Michael Campbell won the Estuary with Andrew Wiseman snapping at his rear.

Lorraine Frazer took out the Ladies followed closely by our Kylie Elliott & Danielle Kinsey.
Roycen took Deep Sea boat & Sikaflex II won the Estuary division.
Tattoo took the much coveted Golden Schooner for his effort on the sauce and many a Narrabeen member wished that he took off his club shirt after the regular club patrons were aloud back into the dining area.  It can also be reported that Tattoo was on his best behaviour last Saturday night when fellow clubman Kenny Lloyd & I attended their annual awards ceremony at Narrabeen RSL Fishing Club headquarters. It is great to see fishing clubs so healthy & vibrant on the peninsula at the moment & the interaction between clubs can only strengthen this. I was fortunate enough to win a Narrabeen club t-shirt in the raffle which may come in handy at the next 3-way if any of our members end up in a state that could embarrass our club & its patrons.

I look forward to next year’s 3-way but am more excited about the forthcoming Nelsons’ Bay tournament which pits the cream of Avalon Beach RSL Fishing Club against the nation’s best. Good luck to all those that have made the commitment. I’ll throw the t-shirt in just in case.

In the Deep Sea Richard Timbs struck again with some big snapper, a yellow fin tuna, morwong & trevally. Les Sonnberg was second followed by Hing Han in 3rd.

Sikaflex II found a good position & settled in for the weekend. Michael Campbell took out the Rock, Beach & Estuary division with trevally, tailor & bream. Andrew Wiseman came in 2nd & Tim Jackett was 3rd.

Reports on a Most Meritorious Fish came my way on the Saturday night. Tim Jackett’s very expensive rod & reel combo’ ended up in the drink, Tim claiming it to have been yanked violently from the rocket launcher by an immensely large fish, others on board suggesting that it simply fell from Tim’s hand in a moment of confusion. Fortunately for Tim, a quick thinking Mick Campbell threw out a heavily weighted line & the rod was returned to the boat from the depths. The committee will consider whether the Most Meritorious Fish can be of a non piscatorial nature.

Sikaflex II took out the boats followed by Wild Wing 2nd & Norseman 3rd.

Kylie Elliott won the Ladies with bream, Danielle Kinsey with flathead was 2nd & Emma Moses was 3rd.

Matt Squire returned to the winner’s podium with trevally & bream in the juniors. Emma Moses came in 2nd & Thomas Kerr was 3rd with whiting.

Luderick Cup

Don’t forget that the target fish for this month is Luderick. Narrabeen Blackfishing stalwart Denver Lawson has had trouble getting them to bite this month which doesn’t auger well for the less experienced fisherperson. Remember that last years Most Meritorious Fish was a blackfish.
Competition is on this Friday from 5.00pm so get stuck into it. I personally enjoyed making contact with club members on the water during the 3-way even if Aidjie Moses ‘blanked’ me when I said g’day on Friday night.
See you all at the weigh-in on Sunday afternoon.

Publicity Officer.

Narrabeen Blackfisherman Denver Lawson informs me that the blackfish are very timid at the moment. Any comments to agree with or contradict this sentiment?
