Annual Wrap-Up

Posted in General by james-seaeagle on the August 18th, 2008

Firstly I would like to say that it was a great pleasure to be involved with the fishing club this year in the capacity as committee member & publicity officer. The committee have done a great job to make sure that things run along smoothly, organising events & comps’ & raffles etc & also thanks to all the members that help out when required. A very special thank you to outgoing secretary Kylie Elliottwho has done a magnificent job in that role. Welcome on-board to new secretary Chris Stokes who although nowhere near as good on the eye as his predecessor, did come to the meeting earlier in the month with note-pad and pen & is already putting motions forward (quickly back-logged by rest of committee to be heard later), & I’m sure he is & will be a great asset for the club.

Which leads me to report that apart from the change in the secretarial role, all the standing committee members were re-elected into the same positions as last year.

The Years Fishing

President elect Daniel Elliott reported the weigh-in attendance this year was very strong. The main species to spin the dial on weighmaster Mark Boyles register was 131.9kg of the Platycephalus genus, or commonly the flathead. 100kg of the genus Acanthopagrus, commonly bream, & 57.2kg of Seriola lalandi, commonly kingfish was weighed and I must say the fillets that Andrew Wiseman gave to Ryoko & myself cooked up as teriaki were superb.

Outside, Richard Timbs & Andrew Wiseman caught a great majority of the 56.9kg of snapper. It was reported to me that Daniel Elliott caught & released his first marlin around 80kgs out wide off Broken Bay. Apparently Richard has consented to supply the GPS co-ordinates to his secret grounds where the fish was captured on the conditions that your first-born child be offered up as a token gesture.

Thomas Kerr stormed home in the juniors with Matt Squire & Abbey Sinclair coming in second and third.

Margaret Whiteman took out the ladies, Kylie Elliott second & Amanda McCreedie third.

Chris Stokes threw down the gauntlet by taking the estuary division. Mick Campbell & Andrew Wiseman were left scratching their collective heads, some suggesting that there is more to it than simply anchoring up at Gumboot & hoping for the best.

Richard Timbs was impressive once again easily taking out the Deep Sea division from Andrew Wiseman & Steve Pollock.

Andrew Wiseman returned to the podium to collect the Boat division for skippering Sikaflex II  to victory. Black Duck was second with Happy Hooker third.

The Open winner was Richard Timbs, Andrew Wiseman second & Mick Campbell third.

Tim Jackett won the Greg Oates Trophy for the most meritorious fish, a monster 12.055kg groper of the rocks.

The committee would like to welcome all the new members & look forward to another great year of fishing. Hoping to take out the 3-way next month.

Thanks to our major sponsors, Avalon Beach RSL Club, Narrabeen Bait & Tackle & Hannon’s Meats.
